Special relief programme for farmers in crop disrupted areas
[13 Dec 2000]

Mahaweli Development Ministry has launched a special relief program for farmers whose ' Maha' cultivations were disrupted owing to declining water levels of the Udawalawe Reservoir.

Sri Lanka had been experiencing less rainfall during the last decade. This tendency has greatly inconvenienced farmers in Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura areas too, who depend on rainwater for cultivation.

On the instructions of President Chandrika Kumaratunga, the Government is prepared to provide optimum facilities for farmers who provided the nation with its food requirements. Sources further reported that the farmers of Walawe region would also be provided all facilities to make maximum use of available land and water resources.
