PA's victory definite blow to chauvinist forces says SDF in Jaffna
[14 Dec 2000]

"Even though the reactionary forces in the country have managed to obtain a considerable number of seats in Parliament generally speaking the forces of chauvinism had been defeated.

The UNP and its allies tried to turn the opposition of Maha Sangha to the draft constitution which had been postponed due to lack of two third majority for their own sectarian advantage into a parliamentary victory. Hence nobody can deny that the PA's victory is a definite blow to the chauvinist forces. It is noteworthy in the North and East where Tamil speaking people live predominantly the traditional communal parties were unable to obtain any significant victory and the pro PA candidates that emerged as the major trend pushed them into second place. This shows that the Tamil-speaking people have started rejecting communalism and separatism.

This is said an  appeal sent to the President of Sri Lanka by the Social Democratic Forum (SDF) in Jaffna.

The appeal further states "The Social Democratic Forum observes with regret that attempts are made by the reactionary forces to manipulate the parliament to meet their own ends. It is evident from the attempts they have made and the keenness they have shown to form a 'National Government' and from the demands they have put forward to solve the ethnic problem. All right thinking people will agree that the proposals originally put forward by the President Chandirka had to be watered down due to the machination of the UNP so that the Tamil parties and groups could support the watered down proposals. It is up to the PA at this juncture to develop necessary political will and courage to put forward the proposals which it thinks are right and conducive to a reasonable and permanent solution.

"The SDF also feels that all citizens including Tamils should enjoy equal rights and this is the only way the country can forge ahead to ensure speedy development. The SDF wishes to emphasise that this is a prerequisite for peace and prosperity of this land and its people. Your Excellency will no doubt be aware of the trials and tribulations that the ordinary people of the North and East are undergoing. To state that this is inevitable during an ongoing civil war will only strengthen the hands of the reactionary chauvinist forces. We wish to remind you that it was the LSSPers and the Communist who stood firmly for the unity of the ordinary Tamil and the people of Sri Lanka.

The major task before the People's Alliance toady is to win over ordinary Tamil people to its side.
