Referring to an article appeared on yesterday local news paper, ICRC spokesman Harasha Gunawardena said that as a neutral mediator the ICRC can inform the LTTE not to target vehicles transporting doctors. “The ICRC is not in a position to provide vehicles for the doctors but will inform the LTTE not to fire at vehicles marked with red crosses which are transporting doctors,” Gunawardena added. The necessity of safe transportation of doctors arose when Tigers exploded a bus in Batticaloa last week killing two doctors. The government has already taken steps to provide adequate security facilities for the doctors who are serving in North and East.
