The Tamil parties yesterday called for the immediate stoppage of war and terrorist killings and expressed support for peace talks between the government and the LTTE towards resolving the North East conflict. “ The time is opportune for the Government to start peace talks with the LTTE with the facilitation of the Norwegian government. The Government must not give the LTTE leader Prabhakaran an excuse to back out of the talks. This is the first time that Prabhakaran has broached the subject of a negotiated peace,” TULF, Vice President, V Anandasagari said. “ It is very encouraging that the Government is set to begin peace talks. We will support unconditional talks,” TELO President K Addaikkalanathan said. Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar said on Tuesday the government was ready to open Norwegian-backed peace talks immediately in a bid to end decades of ethnic bloodshed, but categorically rejected a ceasefire. Kadirgamar said political talks with the LTTE “ can and should begin forthwith.”
