S. Balakrishnan, a Sri Lankan Tamil and sympathiser of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, left the special camp at the Two Town Police Station in Vishakapatnam last Monday on his way to Sarjah after securing a visa, thus ending a detention of nearly eight years. A member of the nine-member crew of MV Ahat, he was picked up from the high seas off Chennai on January 13, 1993, after the vessel was blown up following an exchange of fire with the Indian Navy and the Coast Guard. Kittu, a top LTTE leader, was abroad the Jaffna-bound cargo vessel and reportedly committed suicide.
