The LTTE, the insurgent group fighting for a separate state in north and east of Sri Lanka, appeals to the international community to use their good offices and persuade Sri Lanka to abandon its militaristic position prior to entering into any sort of negotiation with the Sri Lankan Government, the sources said. However the LTTE while demanding for de-escalation of war from the Government continues to disrupt the civilian life in the north and east. On 14 December 2000 the LTTE exploded a claymore mine at an Ordinary Level examination centre at Kalai Maha Vidyalaya in Eravur killing five people and injuring seven others seriously. Meanwhile the security sources reported that the Government permitted several LTTE detainees to sit for the examination. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in a press statement issued today from its headquarters in Vanni, northern Sri Lanka, expressed their total distaste for Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar's statement which says: "the de-escalation of war could be considered only as the talks progress towards a definitive stage in resolving the conflict". The LTTE signals for negotiation while continuing to massacre innocent civilians, bombing hospitals, destroying telecommunication equipment and causing many more damages to the civilian life. The stance of the Sri Lankan Government is clear. They are ready to hold discussions with the LTTE but the Sri Lankan forces will not be withdrawn from its positions under any circumstances. The LTTE has a proven record of treachery. In its previous peace negotiations with President Premadasa, LTTE leader Prabhakaran ended up signing in President Premadasa's destiny to a suicide bomber.
