Ban LTTE fund raising-Canadian opposition
[19 Dec 2000]

The Canadian Opposition has shown their distaste regarding the fund raising campaigns carried out by LTTE in Canada under the guise of Front organisations.

According to the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) the Front organisations are channelling up to two million dollars a year for the sustenance of LTTE, a terrorist group labelled as one of the world’s cruellest war machines.

The Canadian opposition has called the Canadian government to take necessary measures to identify these fund raising organisations and to pass a law banning terrorist fundraising activities, which is a multi million industry for LTTE in Canada.

Monte Solberg, the Canadian Alliance for Foreign Affairs critic says it is ironical for the Canadian government to play the role of the peacemaker on the international stage, while front groups are working within the country to finance political violence.

“ Here we are basically turning a blind eye to this sort of behaviour, and I think it is time to put our money where our mouth is and pass law ”, he said.

There has apparently been little progress toward promised legislation outlawing terrorism.

On February 10, Canada signed the United Nation’s Convention on the Suppression of Financing of Terrorism, which committed Ottawa to enacting a law, making it a crime to collect or donate money for terrorism.

But 10 months after, no such law has been drafted and Justice Department officials say their resources are focused on organized crime rather than anti-terrorism. The United States recently made it illegal to provide material support to international terrorist groups. The United Kingdom has also passed a law proscribing fund raising which will come into effect next spring. Dozens of other nations are planning to follow, the report said.
