The European Union (EU) firmly condemned the terror exercised by the banned separatist outfit LTTE, in the north and east of Sri Lanka. The EU is highly concerned about the violation of human rights and especially conscription of child soldiers by the LTTE. The European Union in its declaration on Sri Lanka at the World Bank Development Forum has reiterated its firm condemnation of LTTE’s horrendous acts of violence. Further the European Union expressed the hope that the LTTE would finally enter into negotiation, as it is the only viable option available. And they further hope that LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran had been sincere when he said that he was prepared to enter into peace negotiation with Sri Lankan Government. However some local newspaper editorials commenting on Prabhakaran’s speech stated that it is one of their guerrilla camouflages to deceive the Kumaratunga Government. The editorial further said that Tigers are purring like cats to avoid the mounting pressure from the international community. Once again the green light is on for peace negotiation. That is the normal procedure of Prabhakaran, when he runs short of military power he signals for talks. Unfortunately for him this time Kumaratunga government has not left any room for such treachery. The LTTE held talks in three previous occasions–twice with the last UNP regime and once with Kumaratunga government- and ended up in failure as a result of LTTE unilaterally withdrawing from the peace effort in a treacherous manner. In LTTE leader’s November 27 speech he declared that his organisation is prepared for unconditional talks with the government in a ‘conducive environment.’ The conducive environment definitely means withdrawal of troops from north and east of Sri Lanka, which the government has already rejected. Under these circumstances the LTTE can definitely highlight the fact that the Sri Lankan government is oppressing the minority Tamil group in the island. In doing so they can win the sympathy of the international community over to their side and further energize their fundraising campaigns without any disturbance. Though Prabhakaran is eager to talk peace with the Government without putting forward preconditions he still speaks about “Tamil homeland” which denotes that he would not be satisfied anything other than a separate state for Tamils. However the European Union confirms its readiness to provide constructive support to the Sri Lankan Government in its endeavour to restore peace in the country.
