LTTE's dramatic announcement of a unilateral ceasefire in the north and east yesterday evening, commencing midnight December 24 have drawn mixed reactions from all the political parties. According to newspaper reports, the main opposition party have responded positively and party spokesman has stated it was a good sign for the entire south Asian region if such talks were started soon. Representing the third major party, JVP spokesman Wimal Weerawansa has stated that his party believed the LTTE would use the ceasefire to strengthen itself before the next onslaught and to attract international attention. "Moreover we believe the LTTE wants to put the government in a difficult situation at a time it was negotiating with the Paris Aid Forum". "We think the LTTE will play a double game this time too," he said. A spokesman for the PLOTE referring to LTTE offer said, " If it is genuine we welcome it. But we don't think it is, because we have seen in the past how the LTTE says one thing today and does a different thing on the next day. Any way it is too soon to judge anything. We will wait and see," he said. Meanwhile, TULF Vice President V. Anandasangari has said that the LTTE offer was good news after a long time. According to political sources, the government is in the process of studying the LTTE offer since it was too premature to arrive at a decision right now.
