14 bodies of LTTE child soldiers recovered
[26 Dec 2000]

The bodies of 14 female LTTE child soldiers were recovered by troops after a confrontation at Navatkuli in Jaffna Saturday afternoon, in which a total of 18 terrorists were killed.

Meanwhile several sources have misleadingly reported that the government is using child soldiers but the Sri Lankan government strongly denies this allegation. These highly misleading information are believed to be the fabrications of the LTTE media network, which is their latest tactic to distort the good name of the Government.

However the LTTE continues to conscript children of school going age as soldiers, by  going against the 1989 Convention of the Rights of the Child, which defines childhood as below the age of 18 years and only those who are in this age limit or above can be considered for the military recruitment.

Children are the easiest targets of LTTE, as children normally love to handle weapons.  With the new weapons that are light weighted and are easy to fire, children are more easily armed. Moreover they do not demand, question the orders, are very obedient and easier to manipulate than adult soldiers.

So far no viable proof was produced to say that there are soldiers less than 18 years in the Sri Lankan forces.

According to the BBC reports at least 167 LTTE cadres found dead on Friday and Saturday after the Sri Lasnkan troops mounted new attacks.
