Arthur Clarke wants 'space elevator' to start from Adam's Peak
[26 Dec 2000]

Sir Arthur C. Clarke, the man who prophesied in 1948 that humans would some day walk on the moon, made startling new predictions for the new millennium.

He now predicts a 'space elevator' to ease space travel and wants the first cable car to the stars to start from Adam's Peak.

The legendary futurist and science fiction writer made this prediction in an interview in the 'Sunday Telegraph' in London.

Sir Arthur Clarke is perhaps best known for his book and film '2001: A Space Odyssey'.

In his interview, answering a question - What are the immediate predictions for life on earth? Clarke says:

"I prefer to call them extrapolations rather than prediction. The greatest technological invention of the 20th century has been the microchip. The great discovery of the next century - which begins on January 1, 2001, by the way - will be new forms and sources of energy: cold fusion, hot fusion, goodness knows what.

"And there'll be a change in our personal fuel, too. We'll be able to synthesise all our food quite soon. All it will take is water, air and a few basic chemicals. Unquestionably we are going to see the end of agriculture and the end of animal husbandry, so-called. That could happen within my lifetime. "And for the next generation of course, the impact of genetic modification will be profound, and not only in terms of health and longevity. Athletics, for example, will be transformed. You will have swimmers with webbed feet and built-in snorkels.

When the interviewer asked Clarke if we would be able to fly he said: "No, I don't think we'll have flying men on earth, but there will be space tourism and huge domes on the moon where you can go for flying holidays. You will be able to travel on my space elevator: a carbon fibre cable car to the stars. I want the first one to be tethered to Sri Lanka's highest point, Adams Peak.
