The bodies of eight Tamil civilians were recovered in Mirusuvilarea in Thenmarachchi. They were reported missing after being arrested by Sri Lanka Army soldiers on 19 December, the Director Media and Military Spokesman Brigadier Sanath Karunaratne stated at a press conference yesterday. One officer and eight soldiers were arrested and are held in military custody for further investigations in this connection. The Army commander is closely monitoring the events and has called for all assistance to bring the offenders before the law as speedily as possible. The press release further stated that the Army commander has ordered a separate investigation to ascertain whether there had been any violation of Army procedures particularly with regard to Human Rights. The recovery of the bodies was done in the presence of the Magistrate of Chavakachcheri on Monday. Sources revealed that the bodies had been shifted to Point Pedro Hospital and the post mortem was conducted Tuesday.
