Cyclone-hit areas returning to normal
[29 Dec 2000]

The cyclone-hit East Coast, North Central and North Western areas are gradually returning to normal, with the accelaration of rehabilitation and relief programmes conducted by both the  public and Non-Governmental agencies.

Relief programmes are being carried out round the clock to restore normal services and ensure the welfare of 500,000 victims.

The Tropical Cyclone 4B is said to be the biggest cyclone ever to hit Sri Lanka since 1978,  that devastated several districts, destroying thousands of houses, paddylands and livestock and marooning nearly 75,000 families.

The government took immediate steps to increase relief packages for cyclone victims after an emergency meeting presided over by Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake on Wednesday.

According to the Social Services Department, there were sufficient funds to provide relief to the victims as there were no such natural disasters during this year.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society and Care International too began relief work as the cyclone receded in Anuradhapura, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Ampara and Polonnaruwa districts.

Over 8000 houses were damaged, acres of farmlands were destroyed and the telephone and electricity network was badly damaged after the 180 kilometres per hour cyclone hit Ampara, Batticaloa, Polonnaruwa, Trincomalee, Anuradhapura and Mannar Monday and Tuesday.
