[02 Jan 2001]

The Sri Lanka Army entered cyberspace by launching its own website http://www.slarmy.org to give accurate, up-todate information on military news as well as the current situation in various combat zones in the north and the east.

Army Chief Lieutenant General Lionel P Balagalle commissioned the site yesterday.

According to a statement from the army, the new website is an historic step by one of the most combat-experienced battle-hardened armies in the world. The information on this new website covers the establishment of various Regiments and Units of the Sri Lanka Army and also gives historical perspectives and background, from early beginnings through the Colonial Period have also been covered.

Starting with the Insurgency of 1971, its second eruption in 1989, and the separatist-terrorist challenge that began with the assassination of Jaffna Mayor Alfred Duraiappah on 27 July 1975, have all been highlighted. Material will be added from time-to-time to increase the value of the information.

According to military sources the website will be updated on an hourly basis.

Meanwhile, according to reports, the army had denied speculations about enemy sabotage when within hours of the historical launch of the website, when it became impossible to access it. Military sources had stated that the site was overloaded by visitors and its internet service provider was checking the technical error.
