It is our duty to conduct the war in such a manner that the respect and the good name of the army are not tarnished. It is then that our victory becomes glorious. By your disciplined conduct youth of the country are bound to be attracted to join the forces and work neck to neck with you. This will be a great source of inspiration for eliminating terrorism". "The ten victorious operations that we have launched during the past four months and the six attacks we faced so bravely have given us sufficient experience to fulfill our goal. The Government has provided us all the modern weaponry needed for these battles. All peace loving Sri Lankans are today gathering round the army. Strengthened by this, we are determined to take every possible step to completely eliminate and uproot the curse of terrorism in this New Year". The message further said: May the new year 2001 that has dawned be a victorious and a prosperous year for us all. Our nation which has a proud history of 2500 years is today facing a very decisive moment. You are held in the highest regard by the nation because you have committed your lives to rid our society of the menace of terrorism. You who have attained such a glorious reputation have to open the road to peace by overpowering the forces of terrorism. The factor that is most predominantly important to achieve our ends is to see to the welfare of the average soldier. In the sphere of soldier welfare the most important is the provision of housing for the soldiers. Providing low cost housing and making available plots of lands to soldiers for building houses, takes pride of place among their various other needs. The Government has already taken steps to demarcate 2500 acres for this purpose. I am happy to state that steps are also being taken to improve the welfare of dependents of deceased, disapeared and disabled soldiers. I salute all the soldiers who have sacrificed their lives and those who have disappeared in battle to uphold the unity and soverignity of our motherland. I also pray that all those injured soldiers languishing in hospitals will be cured soon. May the new year 2001 which has dawned on us bring prosperity to all dependents of deceased soldiers, to present cadres of the Army both male and female, to all civil staff and their families. May the blessings of the Triple Gem and blessings of all the Gods and their protection be showered upon you all.
