Vice Admiral Daya Sandagiri officially took over office as the 14th Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy yesterday, stating that the military effort was a prerequisite to achieve a peaceful solution. He said that Sri Lanka could see an end to the war through the combined efforts of the three Armed Forces. "We are fighting the people who obstruct the peace path of the Government", he said adding that the Sri Lanka Navy had successfully fought against the LTTE sea tigers with its strengthened manpower and vessels. "The Sea Tigers now exist only as a nominal force," he said. The Navy was committed to see an end to this war by improving the morale of the Navy personnel by giving them proper training and increasing surveillance in the sea. "Any war can be won if proper training is given to the people who handle weapons and equipment. We are confident of victory in any war if the correct person is behind the machines." The Commander said he was confident that the Sri Lanka Navy would be on top of the world once it provides proper training to its personnel. Referring to facilities provided by the Government to the Navy, he said that the intelligence services would be strengthened to combat smuggling of weapons to the country by the LTTE. He further pointed out that the duty of the Navy would not end once when the war ends. "The sole duty of the Navy is to protect territorial waters of Sri Lanka preventing the entry of any outside forces to the country, the smuggling of illegal equipment and stopping illegal immigrants".
