A 14 member gang of looters alleged to have links with the LTTE were taken into custody with fire arms and four hijacked modern vans by the Gampaha police recently. According to police reports the gang had been led by an ex-military serviceman who has had connections with a Mannar Tiger leader and a Tamil suspect named Rajendra. There were about four vans from which the gang had operated and recovered by the police. About 50 lakhs of rupees had also been in the possession of the gang. Police said there are six more vehicles yet to be detected. Police have also recovered two pistols, rumbo knives, a foreign made weapon and five cellular phones. The vehicles have been hijacked by the gang from Seeduwa, Gampaha, Colombo and Kandana areas. Investigations are being carried out to find more details of LTTE links. The suspects are being interrogated by police under detention orders. According to police there are several others to be arrested. Recent crimes in Colombo and suburbs have shown that the LTTE have managed to infiltrate the underworld, police sources revealed. The terrorists have accelerated the number of crimes, which are major scale robberies, and it is believed that they are the major suppliers of weaponry to conduct the necessary violence. Even internationally, the LTTE is operating a lot of illegal trades from drugs to fire arms and in Canada they have become a major threat with their well-organized street gangs who are involved in violence and crime.
