United National Party Chairman Karu Jayasuriya in a statement issued yesterday accused the government for not having control over the clearly rising cost of some of the essentials. The statement accused the government for turning a blind eye to the price raises in fuel and bus fares. Meanwhile the Information and Media Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa, in a media release, responding to UNP accusations said last night that the UNP as usual, is resorting to its cheap propaganda gimmicks with the hope of enhancing popularity. He said that the UNP must be reminded when the PA assumed office in 1994, the country's economy was already bankrupt due to its short sighted policies. "No international donor agencies gave assistance to Sri Lanka consequent to the adverse effects of the UNP's economic policies". "The effort of the Government has been right throughout to revise the bus fares in fair manner to reflect on the increasing fuel prices". "The
government is also in receipt of information that the UNP has planned to
conspire with the objective of getting private bus operators to park their
buses in front of fuel stations in a recalcitrant manner until bus fares
are increased," the release stated.
