The All Ceylon Private Bus Owners Association decided on Tuesday to ask for Government sanction for a 33 percent fare hike due to the rising price of oil, sources revealed. Representatives of the Association met with Transport Minister, Dinesh Gunawardena last evening. However, a deadlock over the price hike still remains. According to the Minister, based on the rise in diesel prices alone, an eight percent hike could be considered fair. He also said that considering all the other price increases, a 12 percent hike would be reasonable. The discussions the Minister had with the representatives of the Association ended indecisively, sources said. However, they told the Minister that they will notify their decision to him after meeting with their membership. “ The minister had not agreed with them to increase the minimum bus fare from Rs.3 to Rs.3.50 and to their last proposal for a 22 percent bus fare hike,” Secretary of the Private Bus Owners Association, Gamini Weerasinghe said.
