US President Bill Clinton signed the instrument of ratification of US-SL Extradition Treaty, last Wednesday. The treaty was redeemed by the Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgarmar at the recent visit made by the US Assistant Secretary of the State Karl Inderfurth. As the US side formalities are completed, the extradition treaty in force now. The new treaty replaced the treaty concluded between US-Britain during 1931, which extended Ceylon at the time. The treaty came into being with the need for a new treaty for a reciprocal surrender of criminals between the two countries. The newly implemented treaty deals with the above matter. This treaty was signed at the US State Department on 30th September 1999 between the US Deputy Secretary of the State Strobe Talbott and the Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgarmar. The signing ceremony announced a landmark in bilateral relations and made a testament to the commitment of both Washington and Colombo to the campaign against terrorism. According to political analysts, this will be a very important step in curbing the international terrorism.
