On January 6, troops who continued to the mine fields laid by the terrorists on their withdrawal in the area of Koyilakkandi about 4 kms west of Thanankilappu, recovered another 350 anti-personnel mines making a total of 510, the Information Department reported. Troops operating in the general area of Muhamalai observed a terrorist movement and engaged them with small arms fire. Due to the confrontation troops believed two terrorists were killed without any casualties to our own troops on the morning of January 6. Eluthumadduval and Ayanarai areas were under terrorist mortar fire on January 5 and 6 during the night. Due to mortar fire at Ayanarai one soldier was wounded. A Naval craft deployed on an offensive patrol on January 6, engaged a terrorists’ fibre-glass dingy fitted with a 75 hp outboard motor around 1 am moving at a distance of about 7.5 nautical miles off Vettilaikerni. Die to Naval gunfire the boat and the terrorists on board were completely destroyed. There was no damage or casualties among troops. On information received from a LTTE member, troops recovered 30kg of high explosives, one micro-pistol with two magazines and fifteen round on January 6 hidden in a house in the area of Chekkadipulavu, about 3 kms south of Pompemadu. In the area of Kannadi, about 2 kms towards Vavuniya from Parayanakulam, troops engaged a group of terrorists on January 6 around 11.45 pm with small arms fire. Subsequently troops recovered the body of a terrorist with his dog-tag and a cyanide capsule. They also recovered one T56 weapon, four magazines with 120 rounds, two hand grenades, one roll of flexible wire, ten meters of detonator cord and six 1.5 watt torch batteries.
