The Government has totally rejected allegations made by the LTTE and its local and foreign media allies, that the Government had imposed economic embargoes on the north. It is an “utter distortion of the truth” aimed at winning international sympathy, sources said. A communiqué issued by the Special Media Information Centre (SMIC) states that the Government has made all arrangements to supply not only essential items such as food and medicine but also even luxury items amidst great hardship. The SMIC points out that these supplies were dispatched after a comprehensive survey of public needs not only in areas under Government control, but even in LTTE occupied. According to the communiqué, the following quantity of food items were sent by the Commissioner General of Essential Services alone to the Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Mannar and Vavuniya Districts, last year. Rice 33,031 metric tonnes, Flour 9118 metric tonnes, Sugar 9702 metric tonnes, Milk Powder 720 metric tonnes, and Condiments 1445 metric tonnes.
