Promising victory for Sri Lankan Forces

The military operations conducted under the code name "Kinihira" had successfully engaged enemy targets ahead of the Kilaly – Eluthumadduval- Nagarkovil defence lines, Security Forces Commanding officer, Jaffna, Major General Anton Wijendra announced yesterday.

He stressed that ground situation on the Jaffna district has improved tremendously and that troops are now engaged in clearing mine fields, repairing bridges and further consolidating their positions in areas captured in the recently concluded "Kinihira - 8" operation.

Major General said that the newly aquired armaments played a key role in delivering some crushing blows to LTTE.

However since September 3, last year Sri Lankan security forces have been able to sustain their power in the Jaffna peninsula.

Meanwhile the security reports revealed that the wave of offensives carried out by the government troops forced the LTTE out of Colombuthurai, Ariyalai, Maduvil Sarasalai, Chavakachcheri, Navathkuli, Kaitadi and Thanakilappu.

During these operations the troops regained approximately 140 square kilo metres of territory lost in April- May period during LTTE's Unceasing Wave 3 offensive, the military sources reported.

Army Headquarters stated that 268 security personnel and 777 terrorists were killed during September- December period.

Kinihira –8 operation ended up paving the way to link Jaffna town with Chavakacheri and Point Pedro, which facilitates the easy mobility of troops in the Jaffna district.
