USA against an Eelam State, says US Ambassador to Sri Lanka
[11 Jan 2001]

US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Ashley Wills speaking at a discussion with representatives of local and foreign non-governmental organisations and regional journalists yesterday has said that the United States is against an Eelam State in the island for whatever reason.

"It is the aspiration of the United State to see the minorities live together with the majority community within a united Sri Lanka," he said.

Referring to the ongoing north east war he said that it is the responsibility of the Government and the LTTE to stop the war and resolve their problems through discussions.

The war is being dragged on as there was no trust between the two sides, he said.

He was speaking at the beginning of a two day visit to Trincomalee.

He also visited two refugee camps in Trincomalee.
