Lawyers questioned by CID
[11 Jan 2001]

The CID has been called into probe the alleged involvement of certain lawyers embezzling compensation payments in fundamental rights cases heard by the Supreme Court, sources reported.

Meanwhile, two lawyers have already been questioned in this connection, while suspicion has been cast on two more.

Investigations revealed that the modus operandi of those engaged in this fraudulent practice was to file Fundamental Rights cases before the Supreme Court on behalf of remand prisoners, after obtaining power of attorney from them. But in fact none of the suspects in remand custody had authorised these lawyers to file FR cases on their behalf.

Once the SC orders compensation payment to the `petitioners' by the defendants, who often include state agencies and government officials, the money is quietly siphoned off by the racketeers.

A special squad has been deployed to ascertain how many such cases had been filed before the SC without the approval of the remand prisoners concerned, sources reported.
