The Security Forces in liberated areas in the Jaffna peninsula have undertaken a major re-construction programme to repair damaged roads, bridges and other structures for the resettlement of an estimated 19,000 people, military sources revealed. The bridge on the Jaffna- Kandy A9 highway between Jaffna and Chavakachcheri is now open for civilian traffic after Army engineers repaired the 257.4 feet long Navakkuli bridge within five days after it was taken on December 30. Officers of the Five Field Regiment of the Sri Lanka Engineers had performed the repairs. The bridge was totally blasted by the Tigers to block the Army's advance. The engineering unit has also repaired the historic 65-year-old Kaithadi bridge that was completely destroyed by the LTTE during the operation Kinihira VIII, when troops advanced towards the area on January 29. It is reported that the Army engineers had done a unique job in repairing the bridge by preserving the one and only arch, which had remained undamaged. The civilians of Chavakachcheri Nunavil, Kaithadi and Thanankilappu areas are now free to use the two bridges to reach their homes safely under the protection of the Security Forces, military sources revealed.
