Erik Solheim meets leaders

Erik Solheim, the Norwegian facilitator who arrived in the country for a four-day visit, yesterday met with Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake at his office in Parliament, sources said.

He also met Opposition Leader, Ranil Wickremasinghe and Speaker, Anura Bandaranaike at a separate meeting.

According to Wickremasinghe, Solheim was concentrating on establishing some form of relationship between the Government and the LTTE with a view to holding fruitful discussions.

Solheim also conducted discussions with Professor G L Peiris Minister of Constitutional Affairs and Industrial Development yesterday morning.

Another one-hour discussion was held on Wednesday with Muslim Congress Co-Leader and Internal and International Trade, Shipping and Muslim Affairs Minister, Rauf Hakeem.

Meanwhile, Minister Hakeem has pointed out that in the event of peace discussions taking place it would be advisable to have a Muslim representative on the team for peace discussions.

The Norwegian facilitator was due to meet President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga last night. After this he would be leaving for Norway, sources said.
