US-Lanka extradition treaty enters into force
[15 Jan 2001]

The Extradition Treaty, which was signed between Sri Lanka and the United States on 30th September 1999, has now formally entered into force, the Foreign Ministry sources revealed.

The Instruments of Ratification of the US-Sri Lanka Extradition Treaty were exchanged between Karl F. Inderfurth, Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia and Dr. Warnasena Rasaputram, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary on behalf of the Government of the united States of America and the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, respectively at the US State Department, in Washington on Friday the Foreign Ministry said.

While the Minister of Foreign Affairs Lakshman Kadirgamar handed over the Instrument of Ratification to the US Assistant Secretary of State during his recent visit to Sri Lanka, US president Bill Clinton signed the Instrument of Ratification last week.
