The hardcore LTTE leader "Philip" alleged to have led the assassination of Major General Lucky Algama at a UNP election meeting held at Ja-Ela in December 1999, was arrested by the Maligawatta Police yesterday morning.
According to police reports, Philip was arrested while he was planning to kill a Colombo businessman on a contract allegedly given to him by the gang leader Sudakaran.
There had been two hand bombs in the possession of the suspect.
Philip had been in charge of the LTTE armoury division a few years ago and had been with the LTTE suicide bomber who exploded himself at the Ja-Ela election meeting, investigators revealed.
However, after the Ja-Ela bomb incident Philip had left the LTTE and, joined Sudakaran.
"Philip is his 'LTTE name'. His other name is Esan alias Ravindran", Police said.
Police are investigating whether the suspect had been involved in any other crime committed in Colombo and its suburbs, Colombo DIG said.
explosions at the UNP rally in Ja-Ela in December 18, 1999 occurred a few
minutes before the Colombo bombing that injured President Kumaratunga,
killing 10 persons.
