Army arrest nine Jaffna students on LTTE poster campaign
[16 Jan 2001]

The Army arrested nine university students, who were putting up posters demanding the government should declare a ceasefire on the LTTE, in Jaffna on Saturday According to the Special Media Information Centre, the students had also been distributing printed material in Inuvil, South of Chunnakkam.

The suspects are under police custody for further inquiries.

According to military sources the students have been led by the LTTE to provoke the Jaffna people and thereby pressurise the government to respond to LTTE's ceasefire.

The Tigers declared a month-long unilateral ceasefire on Christmas Day , raising controversial views both internationally and locally regarding their true motives.

However, the government has not responded to the truce since the offer was not notified officially.

Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake reacting to the ceasefire said that there is no necessity for the government to declare a ceasefire as the morale of the ground troops is now very high.

According to political and military sources, the offer is suspected to be another of LTTE's plans to regroup before launching a major assault on some northern defence lines.
