G. Wijesiri has been appointed as the Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with effect from 15th January 2001. He is an honours graduate of University of Ceylon and was an Assistant Lecturer at the Department of History in the same University. Mr. G Wijesiri was admitted to Foreign Service in 1967 and was placed first in order of merit. Within a career period of 33 years he served in Kenya, Japan and India and as the Head of the Mission with the rank of Ambassador in Sweden, Germany and Japan. Last year he served as the Additional Secretary to the Economic Affairs Ministry. Mr. Wijesiri was a mid-career fellow of St. Anthony's College, Oxford and a fellow of the Centre for International Understanding in Missouri, USA. The previous Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Lionel Fernando was appointed as the Ambassador to the Netherlands. Mr. Navaratanrajah was recently appointed as the Additional Secretary to United Nations and Multilateral Affairs. In a career spanning 35 years, he served as the Ambassador Iraq, Japan and Belgium. Mr. Navaratnarajah was also the Director of SAARC Secretariat in Kathmandu. G D Cyril Gunapala has also been appointed as the new Secretary to the Ministry of Estate Infrastructure and Livestock Development.
