St. Thomas' the first school to go on line
[16 Jan 2001]

St. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia made history yesterday, by going on-line being the first school in the country to adopt IT technology on such a scale.

The students now have free internet access and each student and teacher is to be provided a unique e-mail address as well. Access to the internet is organised in a highly filtered form to prevent the students exposure to vagaries on the net.

Acting Warden D. Pakianathan ceremoniously, launched the programme yesterday.

He said that this would help the students immensely in their studies since under the new school syllabus emphasis is laid on projects and research.

He also said that the College was now on par with modern technology as available in educational institutes in other parts of the world.

"S. Thomas’ was one of the first schools to open a computer lab in 1986, when the technology was new to the country while hosting its own web page in 1996".

The programme hosted by OmniBIS.com will provide community bulletin boards and document management as well. The students are also given the facility of having access to their mail from their personal computers at home.

OmniBIS.com provides the service to the college free of charge.

However, master-in-charge of IT at the college, Sandesh Samuels, said that the facility initially available to the A/Level students would be expanded in the future to cover the entire school in a network. He said that there is a lack of adequate  computers to deal with the whole school at the moment.
