Colombo Port Southern Harbour development project with US$ 975 million

The Colombo Port Southern Harbour development project would be the biggest development scheme undertaken in Sri Lanka, after the accelerated Mahaweli scheme, Port Development and Southern Development Minister Ronnie de Mel said at the ceremony held to hand over the feasibility study report on the project.

“It is envisaged that the development of the Colombo South Harbour double the present capacity of the Colombo harbour its completion within 10 years,” the Minister further said.

Project will cost approximately US$ 974.8 million and the State and the Private Sector will jointly under take the project.

The construction of the South Port includes building of a breakwater, quay walls, terminals, dredging of the harbour basin and various other large construction works.

After completion Colombo Harbour will have 12 new alongside berths to cope with the increasing container traffic.

The feasibility study was carried out with the assistance of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) BY Maunsell McIntyre Pvt. Ltd. (Australia) in association with several other foreign and local companies.
