Sri Lankan fishermen and eight fishing boats released
[17 Jan 2001]

The Indian authorities in Tamilnadu released twenty-seven fishermen and eight fishing boats on Monday in response to a joint request made by the Foreign Ministry and Fisheries Ministry, the sources revealed yesterday.

Sources further said that these fishermen had been taken into custody by the Indian authorities as they entered the Indian territorial waters accidentally.

The Indian Government also released another 71 fishermen who were under the custody of Indian authorities for a long period in December.

Arrangements have been made to bring those fishermen to the country during this week, a Foreign Ministry spokesman added.
