LTTE violates self-acclaimed cease-fire in 49 occasions
[18 Jan 2001]

The LTTE has violated their self-acclaimed cease-fire in 49 occasions since December 24. According to security sources the LTTE had continued their attacks both on the Security Forces and civilians whom the Tigers use as human shields to avoid SLA attacks. During these incidents, three Security Forces personnel have been killed and 23 others wounded.

During their so-called unilateral cease-fire LTTE had repeatedly attacked the civilian areas using artillery and Mortar fire. In this context, the purported cease-fire is obviously a mode of escape for Tiger guerrillas from the heavy attacks carried out by the government troops.

The security sources said that the Tamil Tigers increased acts of violence, particularly after the enforcement of the purported cease-fire, compelling the government troops to execute heavy military operations.

Further the Government Information Department press release states that the security Forces are not only performing their mandatory role of safeguarding the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Sri Lanka, but are compelled to effectively meet the increased threats posed by the LTTE.

Hence, the LTTE cease-fire is grossly misleading and carries no hope for peace negotiations.
