No protest march and rally - Jaffna civilians
[18 Jan 2001]

The so-called Tamil awakening Ceremony which was organised by a group of Jaffna University students, under the patronage of the LTTE, with the intention of using the students as their baits to disgrace the Government of Sri Lanka, was carefully handled by the security forces.

Although the ceremony was intended to be held in a form of protest march and rally they had been pushed to abandon the plans due to the request of the people of Jaffna.

Security sources further revealed that a total of ten undergrads and three other students were in police custody by Tuesday in connection with distributing and transporting antigovernment literature in the Jaffna peninsula.

Meanwhile a local newspaper reported that the UNP Jaffna MP, T. Maheshwaran also attended this ceremony. Sources further say it is a matter of confusion that a UNP Parliamentarian had decided to participate at this occasion.
