The Government will conduct the Local Government Elections in the usual manner any day before 31, March, Media Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa revealed at a press conference yesterday. “We will definitely hold the elections on the existing basis of law, in the proper manner and at the correct time. We are quite confident of facing the public and we know that the people will repose their confidence in us, as they have done in the last 11 elections. We are sure that we will win this time too,” Minister further said. Speaking on the infrastructure proposals, Minister said that the Government of Germany has granted a loan of DM 82 million to set up new electrical sub stations at Dehiwala, Maradana and Sri Jayawardenapura, and to upgrade and renovate the electrical substation at Havelock Town. Meanwhile, on last Wednesday President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge approved a proposal by the People’s Alliance Executive Committee to set up a Parliamentary Select Committee on Electoral Reforms. This proposal was meant to have a constructive debate for all political parties.
