In the wake of Interpol, Red Alert Tigers extend unilateral ceasefire
[24 Jan 2001]

LTTE’s unilateral ceasefire, which was due to expire on Wednesday night has been extended by another month, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam said.

The Tigers claimed that the decision had been made “in conformity with the collective will of the Tamil nation which demands peace and also in compliance with the wish of the international community which pleads for peaceful means of resolving the conflict.” However, the LTTE has not observed the ceasefire and violated it on nearly fifty occasions.

The LTTE statement comes in the wake of an Interpol Most Wanted Red Alert for the arrest of LTTE leader Prabhakaran for murder and terrorism, his intelligence chief Pottu Amman and several other Tigers who were posted on the Interpol website on Monday January 21.
