The LTTE must ban and there is a necessity for such a ban, Sihala Urumaya leader Tilak Karunaratne said in the parliament yesterday. He questioned on what grounds the All Ceylon Tamil Congress (ACTC) was pressurinsing the UK Government against the proposed ban when its own leader had been gunned down by the LTTE. Kumar Ponnanbalam, former leader of the ACTC was gunshot by an unidentified gunman suspected to be an LTTEer on 3 January last year. SU President commended both Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar and Premier Ratnasiri Wickramanayake’s stand on the ban and the unilateral ceasefire declared and extended by the LTTE. The LTTE extended their unilateral ceasefire for another month yesterday. The LTTE is only declaring ceasefires to please the international community to show that they are genuine about the peace process, Sihala Urumaya President further added.
