President's message of condolence over Indian earthquake to Indian PM

His Excellency Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee

Prime Minister of the Republic of India.

Excellency,

"I am deeply saddened and profoundly shocked to learn of the heavy death toll and widespread destruction caused by the massive earthquake which struck the State of Gujarat in the morning of 26th January. 

The Government and people of Sri Lanka join me in conveying to Your Excellency and through you to the State Government and people of Gujarat our profound sympathies at this grievous loss and distress to lives and property. 

May I also take this opportunity to express my sincere wishes that your government's efforts to bring relief and solace to the affected will meet with complete success. 

Please accept the assurance of my highest consideration."
