Key terrorist base in Trinco bombed
[30 Jan 2001]

Air Force MIG 27 aircraft bombed and destroyed a key Tiger base north of Morawewa in the Trincomalee District, early on Sunday on information provided by the army, the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation said.

Military sources commenting on the attack said that the bombed hideout had been one of the key bases of the LTTE.

"The LTTE is facing a major set back. With the ongoing military operation in the north, the LTTE is now more focusing on a ceasefire to stop the military from advancing towards the south of Jaffna," they said.

Meanwhile, President Kumaratunga during an interview on a TV programme on Sunday had expressed hope in the peace process.

She reiterated the Government position that there would be no ceasefire unless a lasting agreement was reached between the two sides, and called for a definite date to begin negotiations.

"The offensive will continue through the talks and will stop only if a solution is reached that is acceptable to everyone. There will be no ceasefire,'' President Kumaratunga said.
