Ministry expresses concern over jack up of food prices
[31 Jan 2001]

On the pretext of the floating exchange value of the rupee, prices of food items like rice, sugar, chillies and dhal have been jacked up by wholesale dealers, sources revealed.

As a result of this, attitude of making a fast buck at the expense of the consumer public, many working class and middle consumers are being exploited to the hit.

Realising the difficulty that public is facing, Food and Marketing Minister Reggie Ranathunge is to take stern actions against traders who increase the prices of essential consumer items.

Amidst the speculation of stabilising the rupee value within next few weeks, political analysts are of the opinion that the indiscriminate jacking up of essential items is to embarrass the government by certain segments of the society.
