Two-hundred and ninety six civilians have been killed and over 740 civilians injured in LTTE attacks last year, revealed Military Spokesman, Brigadier Sanath Karunaratne yesterday stating that the one of the main objective of ongoing Kinihira IX operations in the North was to ensure the safety of civilians in government-controlled areas,

"The mere capture of territory was secondary", the Brigadier responded to a question raised at yesterday's Information Department media briefing.

Anti personnel mines laid by the Tigers as well as frequent mortar attacks have become a severe threat for the civilians living in government controlled areas.

Civilians both Tamils and Muslims including children have lost their lives last year from frequent shell and mortar attacks by the LTTE.

The army has also accused the LTTE for using civilians as “human shields” and very often the presence of civilians is ignored when they attack military camps and public places where Tamils congregate.

But in the end it is the small children and women that suffer more from mortar and shell fire, when terrorists attack villages in order to “get back” at the military forces, security sources said.
