The Association of Relatives of Servicemen Missing in Action (ARSMA) will be submitting a plea to the Norwegian Special Envoy, Erik Solheim who arrived in Colombo yesterday, requesting him to persuade the LTTE to release over thousand POWs said to be in Tiger custody. President of the ARSMA, E.P. Nanayakkara said that the letter would be directly addressed to Mr. Solheim. Earlier they had submitted two letters to the Norwegian Ambassador in this regard. The letter is to be handed over today requesting Mr. Solheim to urge the LTTE leader to allow the ARSMA to visit the Wanni LTTE camps and 'see for themselves' whether their children are held by the LTTE or not. Mr. Nanayakkara said that according to a letter smuggled out of an LTTE camp, and posted from Vavuniya, sent by one of the soldiers held prisoner had confirmed reports that there were more than thousand prisoners with the LTTE. "We want the letter to reach the peace envoy before he meets the LTTE leader," Mr. Nanayakkara said. He also said that all members of the ARSMA were willing to be messengers of peace and support fully to get peace talks on track. Last year the LTTE freed three army men and a sailor who had been on a hunger strike through the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The servicemen were freed after the LTTE allowed a number of relatives of fasting prisoners on a hunger strike, to enter the LTTE front lines.
