The prices of sugar, dhal and other essential items are dropping, rapidly following the stabilisation of the rupee at Rs. 89 per US dollar, states a Presidential Secretariat communiqué, quoting Central Bank sources. However it is expected the market to settle at Rs.86. The market price of sugar has now dropped from Rs.45 to Rs.38 per kilo due to the prompt action taken by the government. Meanwhile President Chandrika Kumaratuga has taken immediate steps to limit the use of vehicles fuel and telephones of Ministers and Parliamentarians as an immediate measure to cut down expenses. Sources further revealed that purchase of vehicles for ministries has been suspended for this year and certain limitations have been imposed on the staff of ministries. Further the president expressed her deep regret for the inability to find an immediate solution to the inconveniences people have face due to the price hike of essential goods. But with the stabilisation of the value of the rupee President Kumaratunga firmly believes that the present economic situation will return to normal. She further expressed her hopes in finding a solution to the economic crisis within another few months, and by which time she hopes the Government would be able to provide some relief to the people. Meanwhile the President reminded all the ministers to act in cooperation with the trade unions and requested the trade union delegates to bring to her notice any non-conformity with this obligation so that she could bring the trade unions and the ministers concerned to a discussion in her presence.
