LTTE launches a fresh drive to recruit
child combatants [03 Feb 2001]

LTTE, once again proving that they are not keeping promises has launched a drive to recruit child soldiers by force. LTTE in 1999 has given assurance to UN that they would refrain from recruiting children less than 17 years. But they violated the agreement within few months.

Hundreds of child soldiers were killed last year.

School children who managed to escape from the LTTE camp have surrendered to the Army. Those who had no such opportunity had committed suicide.

Most of the child soldiers are girls in the age group of 13-17 years. Parents and Tamil civilian leaders have publicly protested against conscripting children as combatants.
