Tigers desperately need a lull in the battlefield
[06 Feb 2001]

A government communiqué stated that the Tiger’s leadership is loosing the strength to fight back with the army in the months ahead. This is clearly depicted from the declared unilateral ceasefire by LTTE.

Due to the successful attacks by the Army in the Kinihira IX, Government servants, school children, labourers and farmers were sent by LTTE, to the battlefields without proper military training, consequently making them casualties, sources confirmed.

The LTTE leadership is worried, as building up of their lost strength in the military field will take several months.  It is observed that more LTTE tigers are surrendering to the forces than committing suicide by taking cyanide, when being captured.

Tigers are now compelled to force 1500 people including shopkeepers, businessmen and their employees to undergo a military training, after closing their establishments, with effect from 15th January 2001.

The Government communiqué further stated, the LTTE have made it compulsory that children attending private tuition classes in north and east areas, obtain a card signed by the LTTE leader of the area stating that they have undergone a military training which has made the children to concentrate on military training rather than on their education.

All the above dilemmas have clearly illustrated the desperation of the LTTE to develop their cardres.  With heavy loss of cadres, tigers have met with a situation to quieten the battlefield for a while, to rearm themselves and to operate false propaganda activities internationally.  The main aim of declaring a ceasefire is to come into in the good books of international community and to avoid possible ban on LTTE in London.
