Special Economic Centre projects to be launched by Government

Special Economic Centre projects are to be launched countrywide, by the government at a cost of Rs. 200 billion.  These special projects will be launched under the purview of Ministry of Food and Marketing Development.

The Dambulla Economic Centre, which in operation to cater the vegetable farmers in the dry zone has been complemented by 144 wholesalers operating under its roof.  

With the implementation of the Centre, each wholesaler is now selling over 2000Kg of vegetable daily.  The spokesman for the centre stated the centre which had suffered a temporary setback owing t the recent cyclone and subsequent destruction of crops is expected to pick up soon. 

A branch of the Bank of Ceylon January 31, will provide a 24-hour service.  Steps have taken to open a branch of the CWE for the convenience of the traders and consumers in the area.  The proposed economic centre at Keppetipola has now been completed at a cost of Rs. 59 million, which will cater 55 trade stalls for vegetable growers in Nuwara Eliya, Welimada, Badulla and other up country areas.  The Economic Centres construction process at Norochchalai, Puttalam district will be completed next month with a cost of Rs. 48 million.
