SLT chosen from Asia to monitor EUTELSAT’s latest satellite-'SESAT'
[12 Feb 2001]

A world leader in satellite communications has awarded Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) an international tender to monitor the performance of their latest satellite 'SESAT'.

This Paris-based intergovernmental European satellite organization –EUTELSAT, with 48 signatories, is now a world leader in satellite communications.

It currently has 18 satellites in orbit while another six are to be added over the next 24 months.

‘SESAT’ was launched last April from Kazakhastan and is now positioned 36,000 kilometers above earth in an orbital location of 36 degrees east.

This new satellite has been dedicated to Sir Arthur C. Clark- the father of the geostationary orbit satellite concept.

‘SESAT’ as the satellite for East/West communications opens EUTELSAT’s first gateway to South Asia. It will be used to carry a full range of telecommunications, television, multimedia and Internet services over a large geographical area.

The selection of SLT was purely based on its ability to carry out this sophisticated and complex monitoring function to the latest international standards as well as complying with all the international regulatory norms and procedures pertaining to satellite communications. SLT will carryout this monitoring activity from Padukka where its satellite earth station is located.

After an extensive evaluation of many leading telecommunication organisations in the Asian region EUTELSAT finally selected Sri Lanka Telecom to provide this very important monitoring of the performance of their new satellite 'SESAT'.
