Lankan gem and jewellery exports shows resounding success in 2000
[13 Feb 2001]

Sri Lanka’s export earnings from gems and diamonds recorded significant increases last year.

Gems and jewellery exports topped Rs. 20.6 billion last year compared to Rs.15.95 billion the previous year. This was an increase of Rs. 4.65 billion over the previous year, National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA) Officials said.

This was closely followed by Hong Kong and Japan.

The National Gem and Jewellery Authority has scheduled to hold the 10th consecutive Sri Lankan “Gem and Jewellery Show” in Hong Kong from September 21-25 as a mode of exposing the Sri Lankan gem industry to the wider international market.

The Sri Lankan gem stall at the world’s largest gem fair in Tuscon, Arizona, USA last week had attracted gem buyers from many parts of the world. About 50 Sri Lankan gem dealers participated in this fair. The NGJA organised this tour as a part of its promotional drive for this year.
